Beating the Heat........enjoy oneself.  When you were young you must have enjoyed the GOLA.  Made of ice and dipped in multicoloured syrups the Gola is a true way to beat the heat Mumbai style.  The Gola symbolises the love in many bollywood films were the hero and heroine sip on a Gola together.

Sunday Punch 31.3.2013 : Bhajjiya Mumbai style (Potato pancakes)

If you live in Mumbai you would have tasted it if not then do it now.  Made out of flour and potato, the Batata Bhajjiya tastes the best in monsoon.   If you don't live in Mumbai, get the taste of real Mumbai from the video.

 

Recipe for making aloo bhajjiya

Ingredients:
Gram flour - 2 cups
Onions -  3 big size
Chilly powder - 1 tsp
Ginger-garlic paste - 1/4 tsp
Baking soda - 1 pinch
Salt for taste
Sparkling water for making batter
Oil for deep frying

Method:
Mix all ingredients except Potato and oil to make a batter slightly thicker than pouring consistency. Finely slice the potato, dip them in the batter and deep fry in hot oil (should be around 170degrees). Drain the excess oil using a kitchen tissue. Serve hot with ready made garlic chutney(dry variety)

Sunday Punch : The polishing of the grinding stone at a flour mill

This is a video of a miller 'Kanak' polishing the grinding or milling stone to get a proper texture.  This has been shot in realtime.  

How many of us remember the flour mill and the 'Atta', as now a days we get ready made atta.  This art of milling is dying in cities like Mumbai.

There is also a spiritual perspective to the grinding stone.  Like life we chip at it till we get the best finish and one day like life the grinding stone will be gone.
